What is the function of Matthew Antoine? Is he a voice of harsh truth, a voice to reject, a contrast to Grant?

Ernest Gaines in this short novel has encompassed the plight of the black people in the south from slavery and throughout the 20th century. He gives us insight into the pain and indignities they have had to endure and the strength it takes to rise above, We need never forget.
Through the character ,Grant Wiggins,we gain understanding of the black mans sense of helplessness to make things better for his family.
Beautifully written and compares with Richard Wright in evoking the feelings of the day.
