More >Cutting for Stone author Abraham Verghese was invited to give a talk at the recent TEDGlobal2011 conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. Speakers invited to the conference were asked to give presentations on “who we are, what we do, and how we relate to each other and to other living organisms.” Called “A Doctor’s Touch,” Verghese’s TEDTalk is a passionate speech about the importance of one of medicine’s most powerful and old-fashioned tools: human touch. I love, love, love this book and so does everyone in my book club. It’s a great old-fashioned read with characters full of moxie and a wonderful story that transports you to an exotic place and touches your heart as well as your intellect.
More >Abraham Verghese appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered today, reading a beautiful essay about his affection for C. S. Forester’s Ship of the Line. In addition to being great reads, Verghese says that when it came time to write Cutting For Stone, Forester’s Hornblower books offered him a “powerful lesson…detail provides authenticity, but it is not necessary (and even detracts from the reader’s experience) to explain every last detail.
