Last night, The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt by T. J. Stiles received the 2009 National Book Award for nonfiction.
Stile was exceptionally gracious in his acceptance remarks last night—he thanked the full range of our colleagues who supported his publication, people, he said, who are “in [publishing] simply because they love books.” Of Jonathan Segal, “his longtime and brilliant editor,” he declared that his book “might not be what it is, might not even exist without him.”
