In Memoriam: Maeve Binchy, 1940-2012

Photo of MaeveWe are sad to share the news that Maeve Binchy has died at the age of 72, following a brief illness. The author of numerous best-selling books, Maeve was considered a national treasure in her native country of Ireland. She died in Dublin near her childhood home, where she lived with her beloved husband, Gordon.

Carole Baron, her dear friend and longtime editor, brought Maeve to Knopf with the publication of WHITETHORN WOODS in 2007; her most recent book, MINDING FRANKIE, was published in February 2011. The manuscript for her next book, A WEEK IN WINTER, has been turned in, and Maeve was working with her editor, putting the finishing touches on it, when she died. Publication for Knopf was originally planned for 2013. A new date will be set.

“Maeve was a great lady with a generous spirit,” Carole said. “She was wise and funny and kind. She didn’t suffer fools but was a loyal friend. She will be missed.”
