Reading is fundamental to imagination and identity. At its best, it entertains, but it also challenges, provokes, and redefines what we think we know of ourselves and the world. That’s the mission behind Outsider Editions, a new reissue series from Doubleday. We’re reviving extraordinary books—novels, story collections, memoirs, essays, histories—that were overlooked or forgotten but still speak urgently to this moment. These works live outside the traditional canon, questioning the stories we’ve inherited and opening space for new ones. Outsider Editions strives to redefine: to take our understanding of the contemporary canon and make it more expansive, more complicated, and more just. Still, more than a corrective to the canon as it is currently understood, Outsider Editions is a corrective to the perception of the canon as an immutable collection of works. It can and should be a living organism, capable of growth, flux, and evolution.
