ALA Honors DC Pierson and Aimee Bender with Alex Awards

January 10th, 2011

The American Library Association and its Young Adult Library Services Association has announced the winners of the 2010 Alex Awards, an honor given annually to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adult readers. Among 2010’s winners are The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep And Never Had To, by DC Pierson, and The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, by Aimee Bender.

The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To is the debut novel from writer and performer DC Pierson. It’s the story of Darren Bennett and his friendship with Eric Lederer, the titular Boy who couldn’t Sleep. As their friendship grows and Darren begins to learn more about the darker side of Eric’s condition, the two find themselves in deeper trouble than they ever imagined. The book is part high school screwball, part scifi extravaganza, and entirely hilarious. Read an interview with Pierson here, and click here to buy a copy of the book.

Aimee Bender’s beautifully written The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake is also a story of a kid with an unusual and potentially dangerous talent. Rose Edelstein can’t eat food without tasting the feelings of the person who created it. Sometimes it’s an annoyance, sometimes a gift, and sometimes it has the ability to change her most important relationships forever. The Anchor paperback will be available in the spring; click here to buy the hardcover.

Congratulations to DC Pierson, Aimee Bender, and to all of the 2010 Alex Award Winners!
