Buddha in the Attic is a gorgeous novel by Julie Otsuka, the celebrated author of When the Emperor Was Divine, that tells the story of a group of young women brought from Japan to San Francisco as “picture brides” nearly a century ago. The book was awarded the 2012 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and was a 2011 National Book Award Finalist.
