Charles Baxter Honored With Rea Award for Short Fiction

May 18th, 2012

Charles Baxter is the recipient of the 2011 Rea Award for the Short Story. This year’s jurors included Stuart Dybek, Bill Henderson and Lorrie Moore, who declared: “Charles Baxter is a writer of elegant sentences, an expert in the mechanics of dramatic narration, and a master of psychological exile, which is the unexotic but special terrain of the short story.”

Baxter’s short story collections include Gryphon, Through the Safety Net, Believers, and Harmony of the World. His novels include The Feast of Love, First Light, Saul and Patsy, and The Soul Thief.

This is the 25th anniversary of the Rea Award, which annually gives $30,000 to a living U.S. or Canadian short story writer. Previous winners include Alice Munro and John Updike.
