Colson Whitehead Talks Zombies and the Writing Life With The Rumpus

July 25th, 2012

At once a chilling horror story and a literary novel, Zone One by Colson Whitehead is the story of Mark Spitz, a man who works with one of the sweeper units tasked with clearing lower Manhattan of the remaining feral zombies. That’s right—zombies. In Zone One, a pandemic has devastated the planet, sorting humanity into two types: the living and the living dead. The Rumpus recently interviewed Colson about the book, calling it “a cool, smart take on a genre that, while its popularity comes and goes, never seems to lose its relevance.”

Plus, New York’s legendary Strand bookstore has named Zone One a staff pick, declaring, “In a market of literature flushed with post-apocalyptic narratives and wry, modernist commentary, Zone One stands as a shining hybridization of fused genre and cultural review.”
