Fall Movie Preview

With Oscar season approaching and production companies putting their best feet forward in the hopes of attracting a nomination fall is a great time of year for movies. We’re particularly excited about this year’s offerings because so many of the upcoming blockbusters find their origins in books. From science fiction adventures to films based on actual events, there’s something for everyone.

To help you navigate this season’s incredible page-to-screen selection, we’ve put together a brief summary of our most anticipated fall releases and the books upon which they are based. If you’re anything like us, you’ll want to get reading before the movies hit theaters! 

 

Snowden

Snowden is based on Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files, a tour de force of investigative journalism that reads like a spy novel. Oliver Stone directs this account of one man’s controversial decision to blow the whistle on the National Security Agency’s mass surveillance program of US citizens. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, this is one true-crime story that you won’t want to miss—in book or movie form.

The Lost City of Z

Written by journalist David Grann, The Lost City of Z is a vivid portrait of an age of exploration and a brave, driven man obsessed with a legendary city. Weaved throughout this piece of narrative nonfiction are Grann’s own efforts to solve a deadly, centuries-old mystery. Starring Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson, the film is sure to enthrall moviegoers.

Inferno

This #1 international bestseller from Dan Brown is another riveting adventure featuring Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon, whom readers will recognize from The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. American Pastoral

In 1997, Philip Roth won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterpiece of a novel, American Pastoral. Now this story of a man whose luck suddenly deserts him is headed to the big screen, with Ewan McGregor at the helm in his directorial debut. Also starring Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning, the film is ripe for Oscar buzz.

Arrival

In author Ted Chiang’s much-lauded “Story of Your Life,” the title story for his collection Stories of Your Life and Others and the basis for the new movie Arrival, a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her new knowledge of an alien language. Starring Amy Adams, Forest Whitaker, and Jeremy Renner, and directed by Denis Villeneuve, Arrival has Hollywood buzzing.
