Barry Unsworth, the Booker Prize-winning author of Sacred Hunger, has died at the age of 81.
The New York Times reports that Unsworth died on June 5, 2012, in Perugia, Italy. The cause of death was lung cancer.
Sacred Hunger was awarded the 1992 Booker Prize. Unsworth was also a Booker finalist for Pascali’s Island and Morality Play and was long-listed for the Booker Prize for The Ruby in Her Navel. His most recent novel, The Quality of Mercy, is due in paperback in August.
