Jane Eyre Gothic Story Competition for Young Writers

The Official Rules:

HOW TO ENTER
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Enter by submitting an original gothic short story (a gothic story combines the elements of horror and romance) of your own creation via e-mail to janeeyrestudentcontest@randomhouse.com, and provide your name, your parent/legal guardian’s name, phone number, address, and age. The story must be between 2,500 and 3,500 words long, double-spaced; previously unpublished; and written in English (the “Entry”). Entries longer than 3,500 words will not be eligible for the contest. Entries must be received by Vintage between February 16, 2011 and 11:59 pm (Eastern Daylight Time) on May 16, 2011. LIMIT ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. Partially completed or illegible entries will not be accepted. Sponsors will not be responsible for lost, late, mutilated, illegible, stolen, postage due, incomplete or misdirected entries. All entries become the property of Random House and will not be returned, so please keep a copy for your records.

ELIGIBILITY
Contest is open to legal residents of the forty-eight (48) contiguous continental United states (void in Alaska and Hawaii) and the District of Columbia, who are between the ages of 13 and 18 on February 1, 2011. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void wherever prohibited or restricted by law. Employees of Random House Inc., Visit Britain, Welcome to Yorkshire, and their parent companies, assigns, subsidiaries or affiliates, and advertising, promotion, and fulfillment agencies; their immediate family members, and persons living in their household are not eligible to enter this Contest.

PRIZES
There will be one (1) Grand Prize Winner and five (5) Runner Up Winners selected. The Grand Prize shall consist of a trip for Winner and one parent/legal guardian to Yorkshire, England (“Trip”) and the publication of the Entry online at the Random House for High School Teachers website: http://www.randomhouse.com/highschool/. The Trip includes the following: (i) roundtrip economy class airfare for two (2) from the major U.S. gateway airport nearest the Winner’s residence to Manchester Airport or London area airport selected by Sponsor, (ii) four (4) consecutive nights hotel accommodations (single standard room, double occupancy) in Yorkshire, England, including breakfast daily (as determined by Sponsor), (iii) two (2) entrance tickets to the Brontë Parsonage museum, (iv) guided walking tour of Yorkshire’s Brontë Country and (v) ground transportation for two to and from Yorkshire from the airport. Specific elements of the Grand Prize are at the sole discretion of the Sponsor or its designee(s). The approximate retail value (“ARV”) of the Grand Prize is $4,900.00. The actual value of the Grand Prize may vary depending on city of departure, date and times of travel, airfare fluctuations and hotel charges at the time of travel. Therefore, the actual value of the Grand Prize awarded may be lower or higher at the time it is fulfilled. The Runners Up will each receive Movie Cash for admission to the Jane Eyre Movie for 2 people (ARV of $18 each). Any difference between actual value and stated ARV will not be awarded. No other expenses included. TRAVEL TERMS: All travel is subject to the following restrictions and conditions: All meals and ground transfers, gratuities, excursions, insurance, fees, surcharges, service charges or passenger facility charges, incidentals, departure and airport taxes, passport fees, visa fees, security fees, insurance, gasoline and any other expenses not specified herein are the sole responsibility of the Grand Prize winner and his or her travel companion. All travel arrangements are to be administered by Sponsor or its designee. Winner must give a minimum of thirty (30) days advance notice of desired departure. All travel is subject to availability, blackout dates, fare restrictions and all applicable restrictions as outlined in prize winner notification letter. All travel must be taken and completed by May 1, 2012. Blackout dates include, but are not limited to: June 1, 2011 – August 31, 2011 and December 15, 2011 – January 4, 2012.

Travel is subject to capacity controls, availability, blackout dates and certain other restrictions, which may include a Saturday night stay, all of which are subject to change. If winner is unable to travel by date indicated, prize will be forfeited.

Winner and travel companion will be required to travel on identical itineraries including the same departure date, destination and return date. Winner and travel companion will be required to provide a valid U.S. passport at time of travel. No changes will be made to travel details once any element(s) of the travel arrangements have been booked. No frequent flier miles will be earned on any element of prize travel. Prize conditions may be added or modified by Sponsor. Released Parties are not responsible for any changes of any element of Grand Prize travel and Released Parties are not liable for any expenses incurred as a consequence of flight cancellation or flight delays. Sponsor will not replace any lost or stolen tickets, travel vouchers or certificates. Grand Prize winner must have/present at least one major credit card in good standing in order to check into hotel.

No stopovers are permitted on tickets issued as a prize; if a stopover occurs, the prize will terminate and full fare will be charged from the stopover point for the remaining trip segments, including the return. Once hotel and flight arrangements have been confirmed, no changes will be allowed except by Sponsor. An unclaimed and/or unused Grand Prize travel package will remain the property of Sponsor or its designee.

Prize is non-transferable, assignable and has no cash value. No prize substitution or cash redemption allowed by Winner. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize of comparable value if advertised prize becomes unavailable. Prize may not be sold, bartered or exchanged by Winner. Prize is provided “as is” and without any warranty of any kind.

WINNERS
Potential Winners will be chosen on or around September 1, 2011, from all eligible entries received by the Vintage Marketing Department within the Entry Deadline. Entries will be judged by the Vintage Marketing Department staff, whose decisions are final, and the prize will be awarded on the basis of originality, style, and creativity. The prize will be awarded in the name of the winner’s parent or legal guardian. Winner and Winner’s parent or legal guardian will be notified by mail on or about September 9, 2011 and Winner, Winner’s parent/legal guardian and the travel companion will be required to sign and return affidavit(s) of eligibility and release of liability within 14 days of notification. Any noncompliance with the 14-day time period or the return of any notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and the selection of an alternate winner by sponsor. In the event of any other noncompliance with rules and conditions, prize may be awarded to an alternate winner.

RESERVATIONS
By participating, participants and winner (and winner’s parent/legal guardian) agree that Random House, Inc., and its parent companies, assigns, subsidiaries or affiliates, advertising, promotion, fulfillment agencies, and suppliers will have no liability whatsoever, and will be held harmless by participants and winners (and participants’ and winner’s parent/legal guardian) for any liability for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind to person, including death, and property resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the acceptance, possession, misuse, or use of the prize, or participation in this contest. By entering the Contest the Winner and the Winner’s parent or legal guardian consents to the use of the Winner’s Entry, name, likeness, biographical data for publicity and promotional purposes on behalf of Random House, Inc. with no additional compensation or further permission (except where prohibited by law). Participants represent that they are the sole owner of the rights to the Entries, that the Entry does not infringe the rights of any third party, is not defamatory and does not contain unlawful matter and participants permit Random House to publish their story in any and all formats or platforms with no additional compensation or further permission (except where prohibited by law). All other entry names will NOT be used for subsequent mail solicitation.
