Origin Cover Contest

OFFICIAL RULES

IMPORTANT: Please read these Official Rules before entering the ORIGIN Cover Contest (the “Contest”), presented by Random House, a division of Penguin Random House LLC (“Sponsor”). By entering the Contest, you agree to the terms of these Official Rules.

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN.

ELIGIBILITY:  The Contest is open to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia, who are 18 years of age or older at time of entry. All federal, state, and local regulations apply. LIMIT ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED. Employees of Sponsor its parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, suppliers, and agencies, and their immediate family members and persons living in their household are not eligible to enter the Contest.

ENTRY PERIOD: The Contest consists of two (2) Entry Periods:

Entry Period 1 begins at 12:01 AM EST on March 13, 2017, and ends at 11:59 PM EST on March 26, 2017.

Entry Period 2 begins at 12:01 AM EST on March 27, 2017 and ends at 11:59 PM EST on April 23, 2017.

HOW TO ENTER:  Enter by designing a book cover and submitting your Cover Design (as defined below) at www.OriginCoverContest.com and following the specifications, guidelines and requirements provided in the applicable contest announcement

In the event of a dispute, entries will be deemed made by the authorized account holder of the email address used for entry. Automated entries are prohibited, and any use of automated devices will result in disqualification. Sponsor is not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate entry of information by entrants; lost or late entries or transmissions; interrupted or unavailable network, server, or other connections; scrambled transmissions or other errors or problems of any kind whether mechanical, human, or electronic, technical malfunctions of any computer hardware, software, or any combinations thereof; or problems associated with any virus or any other damage caused to entrants’ systems. Incomplete entries will be voided. All entries become the property of Sponsor and will not be returned.

Cover Designs (as defined below) may not include obscene, offensive or inappropriate (in Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion) material or defame any person, or otherwise infringe on any person’s proprietary rights.  If you are using a photograph, you must have permission from the photographer (or be the photographer yourself) and have permission from any persons who appear in the photo before submitting it.

If Entrant is chosen as a Finalist Winner (as defined below), he/she agrees to edit or modify Cover Design, as determined by Sponsor, to be included in Phase 3 of Winner Selection (as defined below).

COVER DESIGN ELIGIBILITY:    “Cover Design” means an original design following the design specifications, guidelines and requirements, as provided in the applicable contest announcement. The term “original” means the Cover Design was newly created by the Entrant, and is not copied, derived, translated, adapted or otherwise obtained or copied from anyone or anywhere else, regardless of the source, format or medium. Original also means that the Entrant, and no one else, has complete, sole, exclusive and unrestricted right, title and interest in and to the Cover Design (including, without limitation, each and all of the underlying elements of the Cover Design) when he/she submits it to the Contest as part of his/her entry AND that Entrant has the right and authority to give Sponsor all of the rights in and to the Cover Design and all its elements that are described in these Official Rules and contemplated herein.

Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any Cover Design that does not conform to any of the foregoing requirements. In addition, your Cover Design must NOT contain:

  • any content which endorses or condones illegal drug use or alcohol abuse;
  • any nudity, profanity or violence;
  • any commercial endorsements, unless specifically permitted by these Official Rules;
  • any derogatory characterization of an ethnic, racial, sexual or religious group;
    • any display of physical injury, death or property damage or conduct or activity that could cause physical injury or property damage or that is reasonably likely to do so;
    • any use (or display of use) of equipment, facilities or property in a manner not recommended or permitted by the owner or manufacturer or that would reasonably be considered unsafe;
    • any unauthorized use of a service mark, trademark, brand, copyrighted work or any other property, tangible or intangible, or location or place or that would otherwise not be considered Entrant’s original work;.
    • any unauthorized use of a name, person, location, graphic, picture, photo, character, real or fictional, or any other use which may violate any rights of publicity, privacy or any other right of a third party; or
    • any other conduct, activity, audio or visual display, language or other content which is or could be considered illegal, in violation of the rights of any other person, company or business or which, in the judgment and sole discretion of Sponsor, is deemed inappropriate for this Contest.

Entrant hereby grants Sponsor, its parents, licensees, successors, assigns, agents and affiliates a perpetual and irrevocable, exclusive, royalty free, worldwide right, title and interest of every kind and nature now or hereafter known in the Cover Design, including but not limited to a) all copyrights therein, b) the right of reproduction of the Cover Design in any and all media whether now known and/or hereafter devised, in whole or in part, c) the moral rights of authors or artists in the Cover Design in whole or in part and d) all rights of reproduction, translation, adaptation, and exhibition of the Cover Design in whole or in part and the right to make modifications thereto and derivatives thereof, in any and all venues or media whether now known and/or hereafter devised and by any and all means or methods.

PRIVACY POLICY: All information submitted in connection with entry to this Contest shall be governed by Sponsor’s privacy policy (at http://www.randomhouse.com/about/privacy.html). By entering this Contest, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to this privacy policy.

PRIZE:

Six (6) Finalist Winners and their Cover Designs will each be featured and promoted on multiple Penguin Random House websites and social media channels.

One (1) Grand Prize Winner will have their design produced as a special limited edition of the forthcoming Dan Brown book and will receive 24 copies of the special limited edition book. In addition, Dan Brown will announce the winning design and Winner live at BookCon on June 3, 2017.

Approximate Retail Value of all prizes: $1,000.00.

No transfer or cash or other substitution of all or part of a prize is permitted, except by Sponsor, which reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to substitute the prize or prize component with another of comparable or greater value. Any and all taxes on the prize will be the responsibility of the winners. Sponsor shall not be responsible for any delays, damage in the delivery of the prize, and/or loss of any prize in connection with delivery of the prize vial mail.

WINNER SELECTION:  Winner selection will occur in 3 phases:

Phase 1: On or about March 27, 2017 one (1) Finalist Winner will be chosen by Dan Brown and his Penguin Random House publishing team from all entries submitted during Entry Period 1 based on the criteria described below.

Phase 2: On or about April 24, 2017 five (5) additional Finalist Winners will be chosen by Dan Brown and his Penguin Random House publishing team from all entries submitted during Entry Period 1 and Entry Period 2, based on the criteria described below.

Phase 3: On or about May 1, 2017 at 12:01 AM EST through June 2, 2017 at 11:59 PM EST users will vote for their favorite design from among the six (6) Finalist Winners. The Finalist Winner with the highest number of votes will be chosen as the Grand Prize Winner

All Winners will be selected from all eligible entries received by the entry deadlines, as described above by Sponsor or its designees whose decisions will be final and binding, based on the following criteria: originality, creativity, ability to convey themes from the book and observance of all design guidelines provided in the applicable contest announcement, with equal weight being given to each criterion. Winners will be notified via email and must respond to email notification within five (5) days of receipt. Winners may also be required to complete, execute and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release. Noncompliance with these conditions may result in forfeiture of the Prize, and Sponsor reserves the right to select alternate winners (in random drawing from other eligible entries received before the deadline) in such circumstance. If winner notification of the Prize is returned as undeliverable, Sponsor may, at its discretion, select an alternate winner.

DISCLAIMERS:  By accepting the prize, each Winner agrees that Sponsor, and its respective parent companies, assigns, subsidiaries and affiliates, and advertising, promotion and fulfillment agencies and all of their respective employees, officers and directors will have no liability whatsoever, and will be held harmless by the Winner for any liability for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind to person and property resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the acceptance, possession, misuse, or use of the prizes, or participation in this Contest. By participating in the Contest, each Winner consents to the use of his/her name and Entry for publicity and promotional purposes on behalf of Sponsor with no additional compensation or further permission (except where prohibited by law).
