RULES AND REGULATIONS:

Knopf Cartoon Caption Contest

A division of Random House, Inc. (“Random House”)

I. HOW TO ENTER
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Submit your caption by leaving a comment on this post. The contest begins June 2, 2010, and final submissions are due by 11:59 pm (Eastern Daylight Time) on June 20, 2010. Multiple entries are permitted.

II. ELIGIBILITY
Contest is open to legal residents of the United States who are at least 18 years of age on June 2, 2010. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void wherever prohibited or restricted by law. Employees of Random House Inc., and its parent companies, subsidiaries or affiliates, and their immediate families and persons living in their household are not eligible to enter this contest.

III. PRIZES
One (1) winner will receive his or her choice of three (3) titles from the following list: The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by Stieg Larsson (valued at $28 US dollars), The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer (valued at $27 US Dollars), Private Life by Jane Smiley (valued at $27 US dollars), The Pregnant Widow by Martin Amis (valued at $27 US dollars), American Music by Jane Mendelsohn (valued at $24 US dollars), The Same River Twice by Ted Mooney (valued at $27 US dollars), Life Would Be Perfect If I Lived in That House by Meghan Daum (valued at $25 US dollars), Star Island by Carl Hiaasen (pre-publication galley, valued at $0 US dollars), The Tiger by John Vaillant (advance reader’s edition, valued at $0 US dollars), Imperial Bedrooms by Bret Easton Ellis (valued at $25 US dollars), The Man from Beijing by Henning Mankell (valued at $26 US dollars)

IV. WINNER
Three finalists will be selected by the Knopf Marketing Department staff, whose decisions are final, on or around June 21, 2010. The finalists will be selected on the basis of originality, style, and creativity. A post containing the finalists and a poll to vote for the winner will appear on the Knopf site on June 21, 2010. This poll will be open from June 21, 2010 to June 27, 2010. The winner will be notified on or around June 28, 2010 by email and may be required to sign and return affidavit(s) of eligibility and release of liability within 10 days of notification. A noncompliance within that time period or the return of any notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and the selection of an alternate winner (in this case, the second most popular finalist, as determined by poll). Taxes, if any, are the winner’s sole responsibility. RANDOM HOUSE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SUBSTITUTE PRIZES OF EQUAL OR GREATER VALUE IF PRIZES, AS STATED ABOVE, BECOME UNAVAILABLE.

V. ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS
By participating, Winner agrees that Random House, Inc. and its parent company, assigns, subsidiaries or affiliates will have no liability whatsoever, and will be held harmless by Winner for any liability for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind to person, including death, and property resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the acceptance, possession, misuse, or use of the prize, or participation in this contest. Random House assumes no responsibility for any error; omission; interruption; deletion; defect; delay in operation or transmission; communications-line failure; or the theft destruction, unauthorized access to or alteration of entries. Random House is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines; computer online systems, servers, or providers; computer equipment or software; or failure of e-mail or entry on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Web site or combination thereof, including injury or damage to the participant’s or to any person’s computer related to or resulting from participating or downloading materials from this Web site or contest. By entering the contest, participants are consenting to the use of their name and submitted photo for publicity and promotional purposes on behalf of Random House with no additional compensation or further permission (except where prohibited by law) and participants represent that they are the sole owner of the rights to the submitted photo and permit Random House to publish their photo in any and all formats or platforms with no additional compensation or further permission (except where prohibited by law) .

VII: GOVERNING LAW
All disputes and questions regarding the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of any participant or the Sponsor, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules or provisions that would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than New York. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. If any such provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, these Official Rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provision was not contained therein.
